The full guide
If you are a student in the UK, managing bills can feel overwhelming. Broadband, mobile, energy and everyday costs add up quickly. The good news is that a few decisions at the start make a real difference to what you pay for the whole year.
Broadband
Broadband is usually the first thing you need. Before you order, match the contract to how long you will be at the address. Most broadband contracts run for 12, 18 or 24 months, and many student tenancies are shorter than that. A contract that outlasts your stay can mean paying to leave early, or paying for a line nobody uses.
Halls, shared houses and your landlord
- Halls of residence usually include internet. Check before ordering a separate contract.
- A shared house usually has one contract, in one person’s name. Agree who holds it and how the cost is split before you order. Splitting bills in a shared house sets out who is responsible for what.
- Installation may need the landlord’s permission. Broadband when you rent covers permission, contract length and moving out.
What it really costs each month
Look beyond the headline monthly price. Add the setup fee, check any price rise stated for later in the contract, and work out the total over the whole term, then divide it between the people sharing. Wisemium’s broadband page shows each listed package with its speed, term, setup cost and any stated future price, as each provider states them.

Mobile
Students often overspend here by taking an expensive phone contract when a SIM-only plan on the phone they already own would cost much less each month. A SIM-only plan pays for calls, texts and data only, so the price is not paying off a handset.
How much data you need
- Look at the data you used in each of the last three months, in your phone’s settings, and choose an allowance a little above your usual month. How much mobile data do I need? shows how.
- On campus and at home on Wi-Fi, many students need less than they pay for.
- If the house has no broadband yet, or you use your phone as a hotspot for a laptop, a high-data or unlimited plan can cover the gap: see high-data and unlimited SIM plans.
One-month plans can usually be stopped with 30 days’ notice, which fits term dates and the summer break; many of the SIM plans Wisemium lists are one-month plans. 30-day rolling SIM plans lists them with their data and price. A 12 or 24-month plan is often cheaper each month but ties you in for the term.

Energy in shared housing
Energy can be one of the biggest costs in shared accommodation. A fixed tariff protects you from sudden increases; a variable tariff may move either way. Wisemium does not list energy tariffs; add the bill and it keeps the tariff and end date on record, and takes you through its energy partner journey when there is something to act on.
The habit that saves the most
Most students overpay not on day one but a year later, when a contract ends and the price quietly rises. Keep each end date in view. Wisemium keeps broadband, mobile and energy in one place, with every contract end date on record, and shows each one as needing attention before it passes. Add your broadband or your mobile plan to start; you can add them before creating an account.
With a term that fits the year, a SIM instead of a handset contract, and dates you do not miss, you stay in control of your money while you study.
