The full guide
Mobile plans in the UK do not have to be expensive. Several networks offer SIM only plans under £10 a month, which makes it possible to stay connected without a costly phone contract. They suit anyone who already owns a phone and needs reliable data, calls and texts.
What a SIM only plan is
You receive just the SIM. Because you are not paying for a handset, the monthly price is much lower, and many of these plans are 30 day rolling, so you are not tied in.
What a £10 plan usually includes
- Unlimited UK calls and texts.
- Roughly 5GB to 20GB of data a month, depending on the provider and any promotion.
- A 30 day rolling contract, or sometimes 12 months at a lower price.
- 4G or 5G access in most areas.
That is usually enough for messaging, browsing, social media and some video streaming.
Networks with plans under £10
giffgaff, SMARTY, Lebara and VOXI all regularly offer plans below £10, each with different extras such as bonus data, short contracts or student discounts. All of them run on one of the four UK networks: EE, O2, Vodafone and Three. Wisemium lists SIM plans from a number of providers, including giffgaff, 1pMobile and iD Mobile, and shows data, monthly price and contract length for each. It does not list every plan in the UK, and it does not rank them.
What to check before choosing
- Your typical monthly data use. Your phone settings will tell you.
- Network coverage where you live and work.
- Contract length and how easy it is to leave.
- Promotional pricing. An introductory price can end after a few months, and some plans include a stated price increase during the term. Check the starting price and any future price shown.
Prices and allowances change often, so compare what is on offer at the time. Wisemium shows the SIM plans it lists side by side so you can weigh data, price and term yourself.
Wisemium may receive a commission if you take out a plan through a partner. It does not affect what you pay.
