Broadband Deals with Reward Cards and Vouchers: What They Are and Whether They Matter
A broadband reward card or voucher is a one-time payment from the provider, paid after your broadband starts. It does not reduce the monthly price. To receive it, you usually have to claim it by a deadline set in the provider’s terms.
- Paid once, not monthly
- Usually requires an active claim
- The monthly price still decides the deal
Keep the contract price and claim deadline on record. Live offers from the providers Wisemium works with that currently include a reward card.

The full guide
A broadband reward card (also called a reward voucher, cashback card or prepaid card — providers use different names) is a payment made by the provider once your broadband service has started. It is separate from the monthly price. Receiving it is usually not automatic: most providers require you to claim it within a set period after your service goes live.
The three numbers that decide whether a deal is good value
| Number | What it is | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly price | What you pay each month for the contract term | Multiplied by the contract length, this is the largest part of your total cost |
| Stated price rise | An increase built into the contract (often from a specific month) | Adds to the total; a deal with no stated rise costs less over the term than one with a rise of £4 a month |
| Reward card value | A one-time payment after the service starts, if claimed on time | Reduces the effective total, but only if you claim it by the deadline |
A high reward card on a deal with a large monthly price and a steep price rise can still cost more in total than a lower-priced deal with no reward.
What a reward card is
- Paid once, after your broadband starts — not monthly.
- Does not reduce what you pay each month. Your direct debit is the stated monthly price.
- Usually requires an active claim within a deadline set in the provider's terms.
- The claim window is separate from the service start date: missing it usually means losing the reward.
What "effective monthly cost" means
Dividing the effective total (monthly payments + setup costs − reward card) by the number of months gives you the effective monthly cost. This puts a one-time reward on the same scale as the monthly price and is the most useful number for comparing deals.
For example: a deal at £24.99 a month for 24 months, £0 setup and a £60 reward card claimed on time has a total cost of £599.76 and an effective monthly cost of £22.49.
Enter the monthly price, contract length, any setup fee and reward card. The Wisemium value calculator works out the effective monthly cost.
Claiming a reward card: the typical steps
- Your service goes live.
- The provider sends a claim code, a link or an email.
- You register the code on a rewards site (usually a third-party platform the provider uses).
- The card is issued to you (typically 30 to 90 days after the service starts).
- You spend the balance before the card's own expiry date.
When a reward card matters most
A reward card is most useful when the deal already has a competitive monthly price. If the monthly price is the lowest available for your speed requirement, a reward card makes the effective cost lower still. If the monthly price is higher than alternatives, a reward card may not close the gap.

Common questions
Does a reward card reduce my monthly direct debit?
No. The reward card is a one-off payment after your service starts. Your monthly direct debit is the price stated in the contract.
What happens if I miss the claim deadline?
Most providers will not issue the reward after the deadline. Set a calendar reminder for the day your service starts, then another two weeks before the claim window closes.
Does the card have its own expiry date?
Yes. A prepaid card or voucher issued after a claim typically has its own validity period, often 12 months. Check the terms when the card arrives.
