Broadband prices in the UK vary widely by provider, speed and contract length. Many households stay with the same provider for years and pay more than they need to. If you want to reduce your monthly bill, comparing packages properly is the easiest place to start.

Why comparing matters

Providers price their best offers for new customers. If your contract has ended, you may be paying more than someone who signed up last month for the same service. Comparing helps you find a cheaper monthly plan, a faster fibre package, providers you did not know reached your area, and a way off a renewal price.

The large UK providers

BT provides fibre broadband across much of the UK and is known for wide coverage. Sky is popular with households that also take Sky TV and often prices for new customers. Virgin Media runs its own cable network and, where it is available, offers some of the fastest home speeds in the UK. Wisemium lists broadband from a number of providers, including BT, Zzoomm, YouFibre and Connect Fibre; it does not list every provider, and it does not rank them.

What speed do you need?

10 to 30 Mbps: browsing and light streaming.
30 to 100 Mbps: a family with several devices connected.
100 Mbps and above: gaming, 4K streaming and working from home.

A cheap monthly price can hide a setup fee, a stated future price step, or a reward that is separate from what you pay each month. Wisemium shows the packages it lists with speed, contract length, setup cost and any future price the provider has stated, side by side, so you compare like with like.
