How Broadband Contracts Work in the UK, A Simple Guide for Newcomers
Most UK broadband is a fixed contract of 12, 18 or 24 months, and leaving early usually means an exit fee. Many contracts rise each April by an amount stated when you sign, and when the term ends the price usually goes up unless you act.
- Usually 12 to 24 months
- April rises stated when you sign
- The notice comes before the end
Plans from the providers Wisemium works with. Wisemium does not provide broadband itself. Keeps the price, the rise and the end date on record.

The full guide
If you are new to the UK, broadband contracts can seem confusing. Many newcomers are used to flexible plans, but here most broadband deals come with a fixed term. Understanding how they work helps you avoid extra costs.
The term
A broadband contract is an agreement between you and a provider, usually for 12 or 24 months. You agree to stay for the full period, and leaving early usually means an exit fee. Wisemium shows the contract length of every package it lists, so you know what you are signing up for.
Price changes during the contract
Many providers state a higher monthly price that applies partway through the term, even though you are still under contract. It is often in the small print and easy to miss. Read the starting price and the future price together. Wisemium displays future price steps where the provider has supplied them.
Setup fees
Some providers charge for installation or router delivery, others include it. Wisemium shows the setup cost of each package it lists where the provider has stated one, beside the monthly price.
Your postcode
Not all providers are available in every area, so your location decides your options. Check availability at your address first.
When the contract ends
Your monthly price may rise if you do nothing, which is why reviewing your deal before it expires matters. Add your broadband to Wisemium and it keeps the end date on record, shows it as needing attention before it passes, and shows the packages it lists at that point.
Broadband contracts in the UK are not difficult once you understand the basics. Look beyond the headline price, read the term and the future price, and choose what fits your home.
Wisemium may receive a commission if you take out a deal through a partner. It does not affect what you pay.
