Keeping the internet bill in check

  1. First

    Check your address

Your postcode decides which providers and speeds you can get.

  2. Then

    Choose a speed

For the busiest hour in your home, not the average.

  3. Before signing

    Read the whole price

The monthly price, setup fee, contract length and any stated April rise.

  4. After

    Keep the end date

Add the contract to Wisemium so the end date is on record.

The full guide

When you first arrive in the UK it is easy to overpay for internet without realising it. Many newcomers pick the first deal they see just to get connected. A few checks before you sign will cut the cost and still get you a reliable service.

Choose a speed you will actually use

If you live alone and browse, stream and take video calls, a standard fibre package is usually enough. Many people pay for speeds they never use. If several people work from home or stream in high quality, a full fibre package will hold up better. Wisemium shows the speed of each package it lists next to its price, so you can see what you would be paying extra for.

Read the future price, not just the first one

Some deals start cheap and move to a higher monthly price partway through the contract. Others include a reward card or voucher that makes the offer look better than the monthly cost suggests. Check the starting monthly price, any future price the provider has stated, the contract length, and the setup cost. Wisemium shows each of these where the provider has supplied it, and shows any reward separately from the price rather than as money off.

Your address decides your options

Not every provider reaches every street, so two homes on the same road can have different options. Checking your postcode first saves you comparing packages you cannot have. Large UK providers include BT, Sky and Virgin Media. Wisemium lists broadband from a number of providers, including BT, Zzoomm, YouFibre and Connect Fibre; it does not list every package in the UK.

Do not sign for longer than your plans

A 24 month deal may be cheaper each month, but leaving early usually costs you the remaining months. If you are not sure how long you will stay, a 12 month or rolling contract keeps you flexible.

Review it before it ends

Many people stay on the same package and pay more once the contract finishes. Add your broadband to Wisemium and it keeps the provider, price and contract end date on record, brings that date back to you before it passes, and shows the packages it lists at that point so you can compare speed, term and cost.

Saving money on internet in the UK is not about picking the cheapest headline. It is about a speed you will use, a price you have read all the way through, and a renewal date you do not miss.

Check broadband at your address

Wisemium may receive a commission if you take out a deal through a partner. It does not affect what you pay.
