Choosing broadband, in order

  1. First

    Check your address

Your postcode decides which providers and speeds you can get.

  2. Then

    Choose a speed

For the busiest hour in your home, not the average.

  3. Before signing

    Read the whole price

The monthly price, setup fee, contract length and any stated April rise.

  4. After

    Keep the end date

Add the contract to Wisemium so the end date is on record.

The full guide

Just moved to the UK and trying to set up broadband? Many newcomers find it confusing at first: too many options, unclear pricing and long contracts. Here is what to check, in the order that matters.

Start with your address

Not every provider is available in every part of the UK, so your postcode decides what you can actually get. Check that first, before you compare anything else.

Speed

If you live alone and use the internet for browsing, video calls and streaming, a standard fibre package is usually enough. If you share your home, work remotely, game online or stream in high quality, a faster full fibre connection is worth it. There is no need to pay for speed you will not use.

Contract length

Most UK broadband deals come with a contract, often 12 or 24 months. Longer contracts are usually cheaper each month but cost you if you need to leave early. If you are not sure how long you will stay at this address, a shorter or rolling contract is safer.

Setup cost

Some providers charge for installation or router delivery, others include it. A low monthly price with a large upfront cost can cost more overall than the reverse, so look at both together.

Future price changes

The monthly price you see at the start may move to a higher stated price during the contract. Some providers also offer vouchers or reward cards, which can make a deal look cheaper than it is month to month. Check the starting price and any future price the provider has stated before you commit. Wisemium displays future price steps where the provider has supplied them, and shows rewards separately from the monthly price.

How providers differ

BT, Sky and Virgin Media are the largest UK providers, and each reaches different areas with different networks. Smaller full fibre providers often serve particular towns and streets. Wisemium lists broadband from a number of providers, including BT, Zzoomm, YouFibre and Connect Fibre; it does not list every provider in the UK. Whoever you choose, check the network they use at your address, the installation time, and what customers say about their support.

What to check before choosing

  • Is it available at my address?
  • Is the speed right for how we use the internet?
  • How long is the contract, and what does leaving early cost?
  • What is the setup cost?
  • What will the monthly price be later, and is the reward separate from it?
  • How long will installation take?

Wisemium shows the packages it lists side by side with speed, contract length, setup cost and any stated future price, and explains each in plain English. Add your broadband once it is set up and Wisemium keeps the contract end date on record and brings it back to you before it passes.
