Pet Insurance Explained: Lifetime, Time-Limited and What to Check at Renewal
Pet insurance comes in four types: accident only, time-limited, maximum benefit and lifetime. The type decides what happens to a long-term condition. Most policies exclude conditions from before cover started, which matters if you switch.

The full guide
Pet insurance pays towards vet fees when your pet is ill or injured. It is sold in four types, and the type matters most for a condition that lasts: some pay for it every year, others only for a set time or up to a set amount.
The four types
| Type | What it pays for a condition |
|---|---|
| Accident only | Injuries from accidents, not illness |
| Time-limited | Up to a limit, for a set period from when it starts, often 12 months |
| Maximum benefit | Up to a set amount per condition, with no time limit, until the amount is used |
| Lifetime | Up to a yearly vet fees limit that renews each year while you keep the policy |
Pre-existing conditions
Most policies do not cover conditions your pet had before the cover started. That matters when you switch: a condition treated under your old policy is usually pre-existing for the new insurer, so moving can mean losing cover for it.
Costs that change over time
- Premiums usually rise as your pet gets older.
- Many policies add a co-payment, a share of each claim you pay, once a pet reaches a set age.
- The excess is what you pay towards each claim; some policies charge it per condition.
At renewal
- Compare the new price with last year’s.
- Check the vet fees limit is still enough for treatment near you.
- Check whether a co-payment or a higher excess has started.
- Before switching, check what the new insurer would treat as pre-existing.
How Wisemium helps
Add your pet insurance to Wisemium and it keeps the insurer, the premium and the renewal date on record, so the renewal is shown as needing attention before it arrives. When you want quotes, Wisemium takes you to Quotezone, an FCA-authorised comparison service. Wisemium does not give insurance advice.
Keeps the insurer, the premium and the renewal date on record.
Common questions
What is lifetime pet insurance?
A policy with a yearly vet fees limit that renews each year while you keep the policy, so a long-term condition can stay covered.
Will pet insurance cover a condition my pet already has?
Usually not. Most policies exclude conditions from before the cover started.
Why does my pet insurance go up every year?
Prices usually rise with age, and claims in the year can change the terms. Check the renewal notice against last year’s.
