The full guide
If you have just arrived in the UK, setting up broadband is one of the first things you need to do. It can feel confusing with different providers, speeds and contract options. This guide gets you connected without stress.
Step 1: Check availability at your address
Broadband options depend on your postcode. Not all providers are available everywhere, so start by checking what your new home can get.
Step 2: Choose the right speed
If you live alone and use the internet for browsing, streaming and video calls, a standard fibre plan is enough. If you share your home or work online, you may need a faster option.
Step 3: Read the whole price
Do not focus only on the monthly price. Some deals move to a higher stated price during the contract, and some include a setup fee. Wisemium shows the starting price, any future price step the provider has supplied, and the setup cost for each package it lists, so nothing is a surprise later.
Step 4: Pick a contract length that fits your plans
Most UK broadband contracts are 12 or 24 months. A longer contract can be cheaper each month but gives you less flexibility.
Step 5: Check installation time
Some providers connect you within days, others take longer. If you need internet urgently, this matters.
Step 6: Place your order
You will need your address, bank details and contact information. Some providers run a quick credit check.
Step 7: Set up your router
After activation, plug in your router and test the connection. A central spot gives the best signal.
Wisemium lists broadband from a number of providers, including BT, Zzoomm, YouFibre and Connect Fibre, and shows each with speed, term, setup cost and any stated future price. Once you are connected, add it and Wisemium keeps the contract end date on record and shows it as needing attention before it passes.
Wisemium may receive a commission if you take out a deal through a partner. It does not affect what you pay.
