The full guide
When I first set up broadband in the UK, I thought it would be simple. Pick a deal, sign up, get connected. It did not take long to realise there was more to it, and a few small things I missed cost me time and money.
The cheapest headline is not the cheapest deal
Many offers look affordable at the start, but the monthly price can move to a higher stated price during the contract. What seems like a good deal can cost more over time. Read the starting price and the future price together. Wisemium shows any future price step the provider has supplied next to the starting price, so the later price is not a surprise.
Contract length is a commitment
Most broadband plans in the UK run for 12 or 24 months. Once you sign, you are expected to stay for that period or pay to leave early. If you are unsure how long you will stay in your home, think about that before choosing.
Speed depends on how you live
I either would have saved money by choosing a lower speed or avoided frustration by picking a faster one. The right speed depends on how many people are in your home and how you use the internet. Wisemium shows the speed of each package it lists beside its price, so you can see what the faster option actually costs.
Your postcode limits your options
Not all providers are available everywhere. Checking your postcode first means you only compare packages you can actually have.
Installation takes time
Some providers can connect you within days, others take weeks. If you need internet straight away, this matters as much as price.
Looking back, I would have saved time if I had seen my options in one place from the start. Wisemium lists broadband from a number of providers, including BT, Zzoomm, YouFibre and Connect Fibre, and shows speed, term, setup cost and any stated future price for each, in plain English. It does not list every provider in the UK, but what it lists, it shows honestly.
Wisemium may receive a commission if you take out a deal through a partner. It does not affect what you pay.
