Work out the real cost of any broadband deal

The advertised monthly price is not the full picture. Enter the monthly price, contract length, any setup fee, a stated price rise and a reward card value. The value calculator shows the effective monthly cost so you can compare deals like for like.

What the calculator includes
Monthly priceThe headline price for the contract term
Contract length12 or 24 months typically
Setup costActivation and installation fees, if any
Stated price riseThe extra amount per month from a stated date
Reward cardSubtracted only if claimed on time

General information. The provider’s terms state the exact charges for any deal.

Before you commit to anything

Three things to check first

1. Check your current contract end dateLeaving a broadband or mobile contract before the end of the minimum term usually means paying the remaining months. Check your end date first: if it is within three months, the timing may be right.
2. Work out the true 24-month costThe advertised monthly price is not the only cost. A setup fee, a built-in price rise and a reward card that must be claimed all change what a deal costs in total. Use the Wisemium broadband value calculator to compare deals by effective monthly cost.
3. Compare the total, not the headline priceA deal at £22 a month with a £4 rise from month 13 costs more over 24 months than a deal at £23 a month with no rise. A reward card only helps if you claim it by the deadline and spend it before it expires.
Common questions

Black Friday deals on household bills

How do I know if a Black Friday broadband deal is actually good value?

Compare the effective monthly cost, not the headline price. The effective monthly cost is (total payments + setup costs minus reward card) divided by the number of months. The Wisemium broadband value calculator does this automatically for any deal.

Can I leave my broadband contract early for a Black Friday deal?

Leaving a fixed-term broadband contract early usually means paying the remaining months. Check your current end date and what your provider charges to leave. If you are within 30 days of the end, some providers waive the exit charge.

How do I compare Black Friday mobile deals?

For SIM-only plans, check the data you actually use (in your phone settings) and choose a plan slightly above that. For phone contracts, compare the total cost of the contract against buying the phone outright and taking a SIM-only plan for the same months.

A deal has a reward card. Is it worth counting?

Only if you are confident you will claim it on time and spend it before it expires. A reward card is a one-time payment after your service starts. Miss the claim deadline and the reward is lost. If you are unsure, leave it out when you compare deals.
