Getting a Phone Contract When You Are New to the UK: Credit Checks, SIM-Only and Buying Outright

A pay-monthly handset contract is the hardest route in your first months in the UK: it is credit, and a new arrival usually has little UK credit history. A SIM-only plan, or buying the phone outright and adding a SIM, does not depend on that history in the same way.

  • A handset contract is credit
  • Overseas history does not transfer
  • Some SIM-only plans need no credit check

The full guide

You can get a phone in the UK soon after you arrive, but a pay-monthly handset contract is the hardest route in your first months. It is a credit agreement, the seller checks your UK credit history before agreeing to it, and a new arrival usually has very little. A SIM-only plan, or buying the phone outright and adding a SIM, does not depend on that history in the same way.

Why a handset contract involves a credit check

On a pay-monthly contract the network hands you a phone worth several hundred pounds and you repay it over 24 or 36 months. That is lending, so the seller checks how you have handled credit before. It looks at your UK credit file, held by the credit reference agencies Experian, Equifax and TransUnion.

Why a short UK credit history can lead to a decline

A decline in your first months is usually about missing information, not about you. Credit history from another country does not normally transfer to a UK credit file. With no UK address history, no UK bank account history and no record of bills paid here, the seller has little to assess, and many decline when they cannot assess. Being able to afford the monthly price does not change what the file shows.

Your three routes

SIM-only plan

You keep or buy a phone separately and pay only for calls, texts and data. Terms are shorter, often 30 days or 12 months. Some SIM-only plans are offered without a credit check; the seller states which.

Buy the phone outright, add a SIM

You pay for the handset once, then choose any SIM-only plan. There is no handset finance to be approved for, and you are not tied to one network.

Pay-monthly handset contract

Phone and plan in one monthly price, normally over 24 months or longer, subject to a credit check. More likely to be agreed once you have some UK history.

What sellers commonly ask for

  • Your full name and date of birth.
  • Your UK address, and often your addresses for the last three years.
  • A UK bank account for the Direct Debit.
  • An email address and a contact number.
  • Sometimes proof of identity or address, such as a passport, a biometric residence document or a recent bill.

Eligibility checks that do not affect your file

Some sellers offer an eligibility check before you apply. It uses a soft search, which you can see on your file but other lenders cannot, and it gives an indication, not a decision. Where a seller offers one, use it before a full application. Not every seller does, and the seller's own page says what kind of check it runs.

Avoid repeated applications

A full application normally leaves a hard search on your credit file, which other lenders can see. Several in a short period can count against you, so applying to one network after another following a decline tends to make the next decision harder. If you are declined, stop, find out what your file shows, and choose a route that does not need a fresh application.

Building UK credit history

  • Open a UK bank account and keep it in good order.
  • Register to vote at your address if you are eligible.
  • Put household bills in your own name and pay them on time.
  • Check your credit file; each agency gives you access to your own report free of charge.
  • Keep your address details consistent across accounts.

A SIM-only plan paid on time each month is itself a regular bill in your name. After some months of UK history, a handset contract is a more realistic application than it was on arrival.

How Wisemium helps

Wisemium keeps your mobile plan, its price and its end date on record and shows it as needing attention as the term comes to an end. It lists SIM-only plans and handset contracts from the providers in its catalogue, with the term, the data and any stated price rises. It does not list every provider, it does not run credit checks, and it cannot tell you whether a seller will approve you.

Common questions

Can I get a phone contract without UK credit history?

Sometimes, but a decline is common in the first months. Each seller sets its own criteria and none is obliged to explain them in detail. A SIM-only plan or buying the phone outright are the routes that depend least on credit history.

Does a SIM-only plan need a credit check?

It depends on the plan. Many 12-month SIM-only contracts involve one. Some 30-day and pay-as-you-go plans do not. The seller's page states which applies.

Will a declined application harm my credit file?

The search from a full application is recorded whether you are accepted or declined. One search has a small effect; several close together can have more.

Can I use credit history from my home country?

Not normally. UK credit files are built from UK accounts and UK addresses.
