iPhone 18: what’s new, specs, UK prices and should you upgrade?
Apple’s 2026 line-up, what actually changed in the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, what they cost outright and on contract in the UK, and who has a real reason to upgrade.

What’s new in iPhone 18 Pro
ƒ/1.48–ƒ/4.0
A variable-aperture main camera
The 48MP main lens changes its aperture, so you choose depth of field, and it opens wider at night. Apple states around 50% better low-light performance and faster Night mode; the previous Pro’s main lens was fixed.
A20 Pro
The A20 Pro chip
Apple packages the chip beside its memory to improve heat flow, adds a larger vapour chamber and a next-generation C2 modem. Apple publishes no benchmark figure for it, so none is claimed here.
Up to 34 / 43 h
Longer battery life
Video playback on the Pro and Pro Max. Apple states up to six more hours on the Pro Max than on the 17 Pro Max, and up to 50% charge in around 15 minutes with a compatible adapter.
4× and 8×
8× optical-quality zoom
The telephoto now reaches 100 mm and 200 mm equivalents, a 16× range from the ultra wide; the ultra wide takes 48MP macro shots.
Ceramic Shield 2
Tougher front glass
Apple states three times the scratch resistance of the previous front, with Ceramic Shield on the back too. Water resistant to 6 metres for 30 minutes.
4K Dolby Vision
Video and audio
Dual Capture records front and rear cameras at once; Audio Mix separates voices and music from background noise; low-light video adjusts aperture and frame rate.

What the camera changes mean in practice
Portraits and depth
A wide aperture (ƒ/1.48) blurs backgrounds optically rather than by software; stopping down to ƒ/4.0 keeps a group or a landscape sharp front to back. This is the change most people will notice day to day.
Low light
The same wide aperture is why Apple states around 50% better low-light performance: more light reaches the sensor, so indoor and evening shots need less brightening.
Reach
4× (100 mm) is a true telephoto; 8× (200 mm) is Apple’s “optical-quality” zoom from the same lens. Useful for sport, wildlife and children on a stage; not a replacement for a camera with a long lens.

Should you upgrade?
A meaningful reason to upgrade
You have an iPhone 14 Pro or older, or a non-Pro phone, and you would use the cameras: portraits, low light, or the 4×/8× reach. Your battery no longer gets through a day. You want the longest-lasting Pro Apple has made and plan to keep it for three or four years, which is when the outright price works hardest.
You can reasonably keep your phone
You have an iPhone 16 Pro or 17 Pro: the same display sizes, a capable 48MP system and a chip that is not the limit of anything you do. Your battery still lasts. You are inside a contract whose price has already risen once; a new 24-month contract restarts that clock with two more rises ahead.
The honest middle: if the camera is the reason, the variable aperture is a genuine change and worth trying in a shop before you decide. If the reason is speed, Apple publishes no figure that turns the A20 Pro into a number, and a 16 Pro or 17 Pro is not slow.
Trade-in
Apple Trade In offers £25 to £855 against an iPhone as of 13 September 2026: iPhone 17 Pro Max up to £855, iPhone 17 Pro up to £725, iPhone Air up to £515, iPhone 17 up to £485. Values depend on the device's condition, year and configuration. Retailers run their own trade-in schemes, sometimes with a bonus attached to a contract (the current option below states one on the Pro); compare the two figures before you decide where to sell your old phone, and remember that a trade-in lowers what you pay once, while a contract’s monthly rises apply for two years.
What will the decision cost you? Outright or contract
From £1,199
Buy outright
Pay Apple £1,199 (Pro) or £1,299 (Pro Max) for 256GB, or use Apple’s own finance at £39.96 a month / £43.30 a month over 30 months. Then put a SIM-only plan of your choice in it, with no tie to one network. SIM-only options Wisemium can show are one place to price that.
£29 upfront
Take a contract
Handset and airtime in one monthly payment over 24 months, with the incentives the seller attaches. Cheaper to start, and the monthly price is written to rise each April, so compare the risen figures, not the first month’s. The current option is below.
One iPhone. Three monthly prices.
- £56.99Now
- £58.79From April 2027
- £60.59From April 2028
- £60.99Now
- £62.79From April 2027
- £64.59From April 2028
The lead 24-month plan on each phone through Wisemium: 10GB of data, unlimited minutes and texts, £29 upfront. The contract terms state that the monthly price rises by £1.80 each April. Wisemium checked these figures on 12 September 2026.
Because the rises fall in April, how many bills you pay at each price depends on when you start, so this guide does not print a single contract total. To compare with buying outright, add the outright price to 24 months of the SIM-only plan you would actually take, and set it against 24 bills at the risen figures plus the upfront payment.
Before you commit
- The cost with the rises. Use the April 2027 and April 2028 figures and add the upfront payment.
- The data allowance. The lead plans are 10GB; if a recent bill shows you use far more or far less, the right plan is a different one. Upload a bill to Wisemium and it reads the allowance and the price for you.
- Incentive conditions. An Apple subscription offer has eligibility rules; a trade-in bonus needs an eligible device. Read them before counting either as a saving.
- Coverage. Check the network’s own coverage checker for home and work before you order.
- Cancellation and your number. Online purchases normally carry a 14-day cancellation period; text PAC to 65075 to move your number.
- Everything in one place. With Wisemium, the contract sits alongside your other household commitments, so the end date and both price changes are on record.

Questions people ask
Is there a standard iPhone 18?
Not in Apple’s UK line-up as of 13 September 2026. The 2026 models are iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the folding iPhone Duo; iPhone Air, iPhone 17, 17e and 16 continue.
How much is the iPhone 18 Pro in the UK?
From £1,199 outright at Apple UK (256GB), £1,399 for 512GB, £1,799 for 1TB and £2,399 for 2TB. The Pro Max is £100 more at each tier. On the 24-month plan currently available through Wisemium the Pro is £56.99 a month with £29 upfront, rising each April.
What does the A20 Pro change?
Apple describes packaging the chip beside its memory for better heat flow, a bigger vapour chamber and a new C2 modem it says improves cellular quality. Apple publishes no performance percentage, so this guide does not invent one.
Which has the better battery?
The Pro Max: up to 43 hours of video playback against 34 for the Pro, and Apple states up to six more hours than the 17 Pro Max.
When is the iPhone 18 Pro available?
Apple lists availability from 18 September 2026.
Should I trade in my current phone?
Apple’s trade-in values run £25 to £855 depending on the phone and its condition; a retailer’s scheme may differ, and a contract may attach a bonus. Get both figures, then decide. A trade-in lowers what you pay once; it does not change the monthly rises.
